Shopping for the healthiest summertime necessities can be overwhelming, there are so many choices! Many electrolyte drinks, sunscreen, and hair care products are chalked full of unwanted additives and the healthier options can leave your wallet feeling a little too light.
I’ve got 3 DIY recipes for you that will make your summertime needs healthy and affordable!
My favorite part about these recipes, besides the fact that they’re icky additive-free, is that they’re so customizable. Have a favorite EO scent or fruit flavor? You’ll find ways to implement all of them into these DIY sun goddess recipes.
For fellow desert dwellers this concoction is a must! Even if you’re not rockin’ out in 120° heat, this delicious brew will still bring health benefits you won’t want to miss. To maintain health and hydration, my super crunchy MD has recommended I down a homemade electrolyte brew.
Store-bought drinks contain syrups, dyes, and loads of sugar. Level up in the natural remedy department and try this easy and delicious electrolyte homebrew.
Electrolyte Drink Recipe:
- 1 ½ cups- 2 cups of filtered water
- Juice from ½ a lemon
- ¼ tsp Himalayan sea salt
- 2 tsp raw honey
- Mix in your favorite herbal tea or fruit for added flavor (optional)
Combine in a mason jar with a lid. Shake to mix. (Could be store in the fridge for up to 1 week.)
It’s no secret. I’m a nature girl and sun worshipper is definitely on my summer resume. However, protection from its harmful UV rays is non-negotiable. Plus, the first step to that summertime glow is to protect your skin so that you can be free of dark spots and wrinkles!
Make sunscreen at home to avoid harmful chemicals in store-bought brands. A common ingredient, Oxybenzone, is linked to endometriosis, skin reactions, and hormone imbalance. These harmful chemicals are absorbed into the body and can be found in samples of blood, urine, and breastmilk. Yikes!
Sunscreen Bar Ingredients:
- 1 face mask (to wear this while working with zinc oxide)
- 1 cup coconut oil
- 1 cup shea butter
- 1 cup beeswax (more depending on desired consistency)
- 2 TBSP of non-nano Zinc Oxide (more depending on the desired SPF)
- 1 tsp vitamin E oil
- Silicone mold
- A few drops of vanilla or lavender EO
Tip: Find non-nano Zinc Oxide on the cheap from this Etsy shop.
Sunscreen Bar How To:
- Combine all ingredients, except zinc oxide and EO, in a double boiler or in a glass bowl over a small saucepan with 1 inch of water in it.
- Bring water to a boil. Stir ingredients until smooth.
- Remove from heat. Add zinc oxide and EO. Stir to mix.
- Pour sunscreen into silicone molds and cool.
- Store at room temperature, fridge, or freezer.
Tip: The sunscreen will appear white on your skin. Continue to rub in and it will dissolve. Store the bars in a cooler while out in the sun.
Beachy Waves Hair Salt Spray
Those effortlessly tousled waves are a summer classic. I love to mist my hair with a salt spray while it’s wet and scrunch my hair into air-dried waves that say “I’ve been lounging at the beach all day.”
Skip the extra additives and customize your own beachy scent! With dyed hair like mine, daily hair washes are out of the question, I love being able to freshen up my hair with this aromatic spray.
Salt Spray Recipe:
- 2 tsp Himalayan sea salt
- 1 cup warm filtered water
- 2 tsp aloe vera
- 2 tsp coconut or argan oil
- 5 drops lavender EO
Combine and mix ingredients in a spray bottle and you’re ready to go!
Tip: Add some shells or dried lavender to your spray for some extra mermaid magic!
