The compass symbol is a popular one on Etsy, and for good reason! Not only is it a beautiful, symmetrical symbol, but it holds a variety of meaning and significance.
The compass points in four directions; North, South, East and West, harkening back to sailors and ships traversing the stormy seas on their way home from a long journey. The compass holds meaning for a traveler, being a symbol for guidance, the ability to point you in the right direction. One thing that I find interesting is the Latin root behind the word itself. Compass is derived from “corn,” meaning “together,” and “passus,” meaning “way” or “route.” Fitting for the adventurer, no?
We also use the compass symbol on our jewelry pieces (actually, we have two different ones!) Does the compass hold special significance to you? Anyone out there have a compass tattoo? I would love to see it!
