Hey there! I am excited to kick off a new blog series today centered around mind, body and wellness! In these posts, I would like to share some of my personal habits that I practice to maintain health and balance in my daily living. It is no secret that I am a huge advocate of yoga and meditation but I also care deeply about eating healthy, nutrient-rich, whole foods, as well as habits such as journaling and sketching that keep me creative and the ideas flowing! And yes, some of these things may be a little weird and wacky but maybe, just maybe, I will inspire you to try something new to boost your physical and mental energy!
First on the list of cooky-health-nut-things is something I have been doing for months now, oil pulling. Have you heard of it? Oil pulling is basically a daily mouthwash done with coconut oil. Oil pulling originated from Ayurveda, which is a system of traditional Hindu medicine and the claimed benefits of this dental practice are improved gum health, reducing harmful bacteria in the mouth and whitened teeth, just to name a few.
Here is how I do it: I put a spoonful (about a tablespoon) of organic coconut oil in my mouth every morning (it is recommended that you do this on an empty stomach). Then, I take Ren for his morning walk and start getting ready for my day. I keep it in my mouth for 20 to 30 minutes and it’s super easy to fit in to my schedule because I just swish it around while I’m doing things that I’d be doing anyways that don’t involve talking. When I am done swishing, I just spit it out and brush my teeth–ready for the day!
I love coconut so, of course, I love the taste of the oil and really look forward to it everyday. My teeth were kind of sensitive before I started doing the oil pulling, cold or sugary things would hurt my teeth and now they aren’t sensitive at all! You have a smooth, clean feeling to your teeth all day from the oil–like you just came from the dentist for a professional cleaning! I also think it really helps with keeping bad breath at bay–I eat a lot of garlic so I need it! I use organic, unrefined coconut oil, the Spectrum brand, and I recommend you buy it in a big jar from iherb.com for a better price than the grocery store.

A friend just started putting a tablespoon in her coffee every morning and loves it–it gives her coffee a little bit of a coconut taste, making her daily cup that much fancier!
