The Meaning of Namaste

♥ Hello and Namaste ♥ We have all echoed this greeting in our yoga practice, perhaps even wearing it on a piece of jewelry, or a piece of clothing that turns it into a funny play on words. But what does the word Namaste really mean?

Namaste is an ancient Sanskit greeting that is used widely throughout India today, for some meaning a simple “hello.” When translated, though, is means something along the lines of “I bow to the God within you,” or “The divinity in me bows to the divinity in you.” It is an acknowledgement that we are all made from the same One Divine Consciousness.

Nama means bow, as means I, and te means you. Therefore, namaste literally means “bow me you” or “I bow to you.” -Yoga Journal

To make the Namaste gesture, you can place your hands in the prayer position either at your heart or your third eye (thumbs on forehead), close your eyes and then bow your head. In performing this gesture to others, you are participating in a shared spiritual experience of oneness, gratitude and balance. ♥ I hope you have a lovely week and Namaste ♥
